*What is patina leather? One of the
hallmarks of Full Top Grain leather is that it ages beautifully forming a
natural patina. As your high-quality leather ages, you will see gradual changes
such as more depth to the color, increased suppleness and a light sheen. The
cool thing about leather patina is that each one is unique. It is the product
of its own environment, so every premium leather item tells its own distinct
story.
As leather items age, they inevitably become exposed to different types
of weather such as sun, wind, and rain. These elements will affect how the
leather looks. Many leather items will also accumulate dirt and body oils as
they age, think of leather coasters or wallets that come in daily contact with
human skin. Each variable that leather comes into contact with gradually alters
its appearance. For example, rain can leave interesting watermarks and sunlight
might cause a golden shade to emerge. Here are the main variables that
influence how patina develops on leather: heat exposure, uv rays exposure,
oils and dirt from human skin, any type of moisture or rain, denim or fabric
dye from clothing and everyday wear and tear (scratches and blemishes).
What is VEG-TAN Leather? The process through which animal
hides are turned into leather Is referred to as tanning. Vegetable tanning Is
one of the main leather production methods in use today: only 10% of all
leather is vegetable tanned thus making veg-tan leather very expensive. This
technique involves using natural vegetable tannin to alter the protein
structure of the hide, causing It to become leather. In essence, these organic
substances serve three functions: preserving, strengthening and giving color to
the hide.
The story of vegetable tanned leather
is intricately tied up with the wider history of human development. One of four
prehistoric tanning techniques, our ancestors first utilized the process some
5,000 years ago in Sumer (modem-day Iraq and Kuwait), where hides were soaked
in water filled with Mimosa bark and leaves. The resulting leather was then
used to create primitive types of clothes, which kept them warm and provided
camouflage for hunting, as well as bags for transporting their possessions.
Later civilizations, like the Ancient Egyptians and Babylonians,
continued to make advancements In vegetable tanning, but it was the Romans who
first regulated the industry. This allowed Tuscan craftsmen to perfect the art
of making leather sandals.
Lastly, vegetable tanning is the most environmentally-friendly method of
leather production. It's worth reiterating that only natural and organic
substances are used during the production process.
